The American Lawyer named Jenner & Block as the nation’s #1 pro bono law firm. This marked the ninth time the firm has achieved the leading spot in the publication’s highly regarded annual survey of pro bono commitment. The firm has placed among the top 10 pro bono programs nationwide every year since the survey began in 1990.

The American Lawyer also named the firm as its “Pro Bono Champion” for the inaugural American Lawyer Industry Awards. The award honors the “exceptional work that goes on across the entire legal services delivery spectrum and the increasing interconnectedness among members of that community,” according to The American Lawyer.

The National Law Journal

For the fifth consecutive year, Jenner & Block was named to The National Law Journal’s “Pro Bono Hot List.” The firm was one of only seven law firms across the United States selected for this recognition.

40 at 50

The Jenner & Block Washington, DC office was recognized by the DC Circuit Judicial Conference Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services as one of only two firms in the District of Columbia Circuit to have more than 70 percent of its lawyers contribute 50 hours or more to pro bono service in 2017. The committee honors DC law firms at which at least 40 percent of all lawyers contribute 50 hours or more to individuals with limited financial resources or to charitable organizations. Jenner & Block was one of only four firms with more than 60 percent of its lawyers devoting 50 hours or more. 


Justice John Paul Stevens Award

Partner Terri Mascherin was honored with the 2018 Justice John Paul Stevens Award. Presented by the Chicago Bar Association and Chicago Bar Foundation, the award honors Justice Stevens, a Chicago native and an alum of Jenner & Block, for his lifetime effort to improve the system of justice and his active participation and dedication to the CBA. The award is presented annually to lawyers who best exemplify Justice Stevens’ commitment to integrity and public service in the practice of law.

Catholic Immigration Legal Network, Inc. Pro Bono Award 

Jenner & Block received the annual pro bono award from Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) for the firm’s commitment in representing immigrants in removal proceedings. CLINIC’s Board of Immigration Appeals Pro Bono Project identifies potentially meritorious administrative appeals by unrepresented non-citizens in detention and refers those cases to pro bono counsel. The firm has successfully handled a number of cases referred by CLINIC in recent years, including appeals before the Board of Immigration Appeals as well as petitions for review by the circuit courts and representation in the Immigration Court following a successful appeal. The firm’s representation of clients referred by CLINIC includes:

  • Successfully obtained asylum and withholding of removal for a Somali man who moved to South Africa and faced persecution there as a Somali migrant;

  • Successfully obtained asylum for a Bangladeshi man who was a member of an opposition political party in Bangladesh, some members of whom had resorted to violence;

  • Successfully obtained asylum for a Venezuelan political activist who was persecuted on account of his political activities;

  • Successfully obtained asylum pending background checks for a Honduran man who fled gang violence after the assassination of multiple family members in retaliation for a brother’s employment with an anti-gang police unit; and

  • Successfully obtained a remand to immigration court for an Iraqi man who fled sectarian violence; representation in immigration court is ongoing.


Northern District of Illinois Pro Bono Award

The US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association awarded 18 Jenner & Block lawyers with the 2018 Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service for “providing outstanding pro bono and public interest representation in civil and criminal matters before the district court.” The award recipients were recognized for successfully completing three different cases: 

  • In Tolbert v. Colvin, we represented Ms. Tolbert in successfully awarding her many years of much-needed back payments of disability benefits and reversing the decision of the administrative law judge, who had twice denied her claims. Award recipients for this matter are firm Chair Craig Martin and Associate Elin Park.

  • In Tucker v. Wexford, we represented Mr. Tucker in damages sought against Wexford Health Sources, Inc. for inadequate and untimely medical care after a six-year delay in diagnosing and treating his glaucoma, which caused severe damage to his vision. The lawyers receiving the award for this matter are Partners Bob Byman and Jennifer Senior and Associate Roni Cohen.

  • In Luellen v. Schwartz, we represented Mr. Luellen in a Section 1983 matter that spanned two years and involved an incarcerated individual who filed suit alleging, among other things, that he was unable to receive adequate medical treatment to alleviate a post-operative condition. Award recipients for this matter are Partners Melissa RootStephen BrownJeffrey Atteberry and Rachel Morse; Of Counsel Daniel Murray; Associates Chris SheehanLaura NorrisAnna Mitran and Matthew Gordon; Special Counsel Paul Alp; Staff Attorney Laura Duchesne; and Discovery Attorney Dusan Sarapa.

Albert E. Jenner Pro Bono Award

The firm hosted its annual Pro Bono Awards Celebration, honoring the firm's long-standing commitment to pro bono work and those who performed and supported pro bono service in exceptional ways. Partners David DeBruin and Sarah Weiss received the "Albert E. Jenner Pro Bono Award” – an award recognizing firm lawyers for their pro bono work. Paralegal Daniel Garcia and Legal Assistant Nora Peralta received the inaugural "Jenner & Block Award for Excellence in Pro Bono or Public Service" – an award recognizing professional staff who support the firm's pro bono and community service efforts.
